Happy New Year!

It’s great to be back in the studio working on the latest window for Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops. It depicts Saint André Bessette and I wanted to show you the detail of the head on the easel.  We needed to approach this figure as a portrait as there are existing photographs and paintings of him. Portraiture, in any medium, is challenging – it’s never just a matter of capturing a likeness, but also trying to convey character as well. As always John paints mostly with a needle, an almost reverse pointillist technique that allows light to penetrate even the darkest shadows on the face, and is more effective for conveying subtle expression. The window is currently being leaded and will be installed in the Spring.
